2# What are all the Options To Replace A Tooth?

The options you have to replace a tooth are:

Removable Option

  • A denture

Fixed Option

  • A fixed bridge – This is where  the closest tooth or teeth to the gap  are used as support for the missing tooth. The big disadvantage, is that the adjacent teeth have to be reduced in size to accommodate the bridge
  • A sticky bridge – one where the replacement tooth is stuck to adjacent teeth.- with this option though you need teeth on either side
  • Dental Implant – An implant/ titanium post is fitted in the gap.

#3 What are these Options?

There are many instances where you may loose  a tooth /teeth. It can be devastating to the majority of people and as a result they rush to get that tooth fixed.
Once a tooth or teeth are lost, the gum shrinks and the bone resorbs thus reducing in height. So the faster you get to the dentist the better.
The various options are:

  • A Prosthetic appliance (a denture)- For single teeth, dentures fill  missing areas   quite efficiently. However due to the  light  weight nature of the denture, it can move around and in certain conditions hooks  are added to the denture to increase its retention.

Dentures can work well with many missing teeth, and can produce remarkable results.
Dental Bridges – A dental bridge is a  number of ceramic crowns joined together that fit on top of abutment teeth.

Two types of dental bridges exist:

  • An Adhesive dental bridge – This option is reserved for the loss of a single tooth. The bridge is stuck to the nearby teeth with dental cement and kept in place by getting the correct occlusal balance. Adhesive bridges have been known to fail if the occlusion is not correct, and aesthetically they can develop a gap under the crown as a result of bone resorption.
  •  Fixed Bridges- A more common approach is the use of fixed dental bridges. These require the abutment teeth to be reduced in size by 1.5-2mm all the way around depending on the material of the bridge used.?The bridge is then cemented on to the abutments in place. The problem with dental bridges, is that you require good strong abutments. This can be a problem if there is poor oral hygiene and caries present. Root filled teeth pose another problem, because they are weaker, they are more prone to fracture. Of course the risk of drilling a tooth can lead to a root canal.
  • Dental Implants are  by far the best solution to missing teeth if successful. Not only do they fill the gap but prevent subsequent bone resorption as well. Again the dental implant is fixed and it does not affect any other teeth..

So once Again, What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a synthetic tooth. It has ceramic head that copies the crown of the tooth and a titanium post that copies the root of the tooth.
Before dental implants can be considered, there has to be a lot of planning and assessment that has to be carried out by the implant dentist.

#4 What is the Procedure for Dental Implants

The dentist has to take many radiographs (x-rays) of the mouth before any treatment is considered. The dentist with these tools can assess if there is sufficient bone available to support an implant and look out for any other anatomical landmarks like nerve openings.

Once the x-rays are assessed, the mouth has to be checked. The dentist has to perform an examination, chart all the teeth, and assess the periodontal condition of the mouth. Not only that, the mouth has to be healthy, so any decay found in the mouth has to be treated first and any rotten/infected teeth, gingivitis and periodontitis has to be treated before an implant is placed.
Your lifestyle also has to be checked, ie smoking – this is a risk factor in the healing of dental implants.
Dental implants can not only be used to replace a single missing tooth, but can be used in more complex treatment plans to reconstruct smiles. Dental implants are a cornerstone in cosmetic dentistry, and are utilized by cosmetic dentists to achieve smile makeovers.
